From July 6, all new car models will be equipped with “event data recorders”.

These black box-like devices will aim to record a set of data 30 seconds before and 10 seconds after each accident, reports

La Dépêche du Midi

.

The speed, the wearing or not of the seat belt, the phases of acceleration and braking of the vehicle, the force of collision, the use of the indicator or even the inclination of the vehicle will for example be listed.

Unlike black boxes used in aeronautics, however, this device will not be able to record sounds or GPS indications.

Halve the number of road deaths by 2030

Announced by the European Parliament in 2019, the device aims to "halve the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads by 2030", explains the general delegate of the Road Prevention association.

Adopted by MEPs, these black boxes will be accompanied by a whole battery of other devices such as drowsiness detectors and intelligent speed limiters.

According to

Franceinfo

, these black boxes have been mandatory in the United States since 2014. There, they would have led to a 20% drop in accidents.

In France, they will be installed in cars as well as in utility vehicles, buses or trucks.

From July 7, 2024, all new vehicles put up for sale will be required to include them.

Two-wheelers and vehicles on the market will not be affected.
