A famous portrait of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe by pop artist Andy Warhol sold for a record $195 million on Monday.
The sale of the 1964 screenprint “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” at Christie's New York headquarters lasted just four minutes.
Warhol's work is thus the most expensive work of art from the 20th century ever auctioned.
The work remained just under the estimate of $ 200 million at the auction.
The screenprint features the actress with a pink face, ruby red lips, yellow hair and blue eyeshadow against a light blue background.
Christie's sold the work on behalf of the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation based in Zurich.
The most expensive painting ever auctioned is Salvator Mundi, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, which fetched $450.3 million at auction in 2017.
The previous record for a 20th-century work was set by Pablo Picasso's "Les femmes d'Alger (Version 0)" ("The Women of Algiers"), which fetched $179.4 million at auction in May 2015. The previous record for a Warhol painting is $105.4 million.
