Every year in France, three million French people choose to move.

In this period of inflation, the cost of moving increases by 15 to 30% compared to last year.

To try to control their costs, moving professionals have considered several options.

A move that cost 1,500 euros on average last year will now cost 1,800 euros, or 300 euros more.

This increase is due to the soaring prices of energy and raw materials which directly impact the removals sector.

“The price of fuel, a year ago we bought it 1.10 euro, 1.20 euro, today it is 1.80 euro. The increase in cardboard is more than 50% or even more. A box that the consumer bought for one euro a year ago is now practically two euros. Then everything that is packaging material, such as adhesive, has doubled", explains Augustin Lathoud, president of the Economic Commission of the Trade Union Chamber of Removals.

A sector under threat

In an attempt to control costs, moving professionals have considered several options, such as reusing boxes.

But this method is complicated to set up, in particular for hygiene issues.

For the moment, they are not seeing any effects on demand, but this could change, especially since their prices could increase further if price increases continue.

"Overall, if we look at our costs, they have exploded and we must necessarily pass this on to consumers. It is the sustainability of our businesses that depends on it", deplores Augustin Lathoud.
