The recovery effect has passed.

After a positive year in 2021 (677,700 jobs created, +3.5%) more than offsetting the drop in 2020 linked to the Covid-19 pandemic, and ended in the last quarter at +0.6%, private salaried employment marked not.

According to the provisional estimate published Friday by Insee, there were 66,100 net job creations in the first quarter of 2022, i.e. a small increase of 0.3%.

In detail, in the first quarter, the interim, compass of the employment market, fell slightly (-1.4%, or -11,500 jobs) after seven consecutive quarters of increase.

Temporary employment remained, in the first quarter of 2022, above its pre-crisis level: +4.8% (i.e. +37,500 jobs) compared to the end of 2019. Excluding temporary employment, private salaried employment increased in all sectors, but industry remains below its pre-crisis level.

Almost 400,000 more jobs than before the health crisis

In the commercial tertiary sector, private salaried employment slowed in the first quarter (+0.3%, i.e. +38,900 after +57,100 jobs in the last quarter of 2021).

In this sector, employment far exceeds its pre-crisis level: +1.9%, i.e. +218,300 jobs compared to the end of 2019. In construction, private salaried employment increased again by 0.4% (+6,000 jobs, after +6,300).

It exceeds its level at the end of 2019 by 5.1% (+73,600 jobs).

Finally, private salaried employment in the non-market tertiary sector increased significantly by 1.2% (i.e. +29,700) and greatly exceeded its level at the end of 2019: +3.4%, i.e. +84,600 jobs.

In total, at the end of March 2022, private salaried employment exceeded its level before the health crisis, at the end of 2019, by 2%, or +389,700 jobs, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.
