With an amendment, the Union wants to prevent the government from diverting funds from the special fund created for the Bundeswehr for other purposes.

In order to be able to mobilize 100 billion euros in the next few years, bypassing the debt rule, the traffic light wants to change the Basic Law.

You need the CDU and CSU for that.

In the amendment to the coalition's draft law, the Union faction calls for the words "alliance and defense capability" to be replaced by the word "armed forces".

The amendment has been submitted to the FAZ.

The CDU and CSU fear that some of the funds will be used for purposes other than strengthening the Bundeswehr.

"We simply want to see the Chancellor's announcements from his February 27 speech implemented," said the deputy chairman of the Union faction, Mathias Middelberg, of the FAZ - the Chancellor had expressly announced a "Bundeswehr special fund".

"In terms of content, it must therefore be clear that the 100 billion euros will go entirely to the Bundeswehr," emphasized the CDU politician.

The wording presented by the traffic light is too vague and also allows for completely different uses, he said.

With its application, the Union faction takes up what the Ministry of Finance led by Christian Lindner (FDP) had planned.

Paragraph 2 (purpose) of the draft for the establishment law states: “Expenditures for complex, multi-year measures to equip the armed forces will be made from the special fund.” equipment project.

The Union also wants to see NATO's goal of investing two percent of economic output in defense firmly established.

She was taken aback by the statement made by SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich in the Bundestag that the SPD still believes "there is more to preventing war than increasing spending on armaments".

The SPD certainly does not want to “prescribe to future generations how high this expenditure should be”.

Here, too, the Union adheres to the clear statement made by the Chancellor, said Middelberg.

Compliance with this goal can be calculated flexibly and over several years.

"We want to see this goal fixed in law."
