Despite the Corona crisis, the German economy grew slightly at the beginning of 2022.

Between January and March, gross domestic product rose by 0.2 percent compared to the previous quarter, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday.

Economists had only expected growth of 0.1 percent.

The economy thus prevented a slide into recession.

Because at the end of 2021, GDP had fallen by 0.3 percent.

Most experts expect economic growth for the current year.

But the uncertainty about the consequences of the Ukraine war and the West's sanctions against Russia is enormous.

The high inflation caused by rising prices for energy and raw materials is a burden for companies and consumers.

The federal government only expects growth of 2.2 percent for 2022.

Economics Minister Robert Habeck recently warned that if gas supplies from Russia suddenly stopped, a recession would be unavoidable.
