Completed construction of the country's first waste-to-energy plant

The construction of the country’s first waste-to-energy plant has been completed, and it will soon enter the testing and operation phase and be a pivotal addition to the clean energy sector in the country. The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company "Masdar" is one of the world's leading energy companies.

The Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company, Bee’ah Group and “Masdar” intend to officially open the waste-to-energy plant in a ceremony to be held soon, and the Bee’ah Group and “Masdar” have begun to explore opportunities to establish other plants of this kind in various parts of the UAE. and region.

After its operation, the station will help the Emirate of Sharjah to be the first city in the Middle East region free of waste while achieving a high value of non-recyclable waste and raising the rate of waste diversion away from landfills from 76 percent to 100 percent, and will also help reduce waste quantities directed to landfills and supports the state's directions to enhance the clean energy mix.

When the plant reaches its maximum operational capacity, it will contribute to diverting up to 300,000 tons of non-recyclable waste annually from landfills, to produce 30 megawatts of low-carbon energy to meet the electricity needs of 28 thousand homes in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Commenting on this achievement, Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of Bee’ah Group, said: “The completion of the construction of the new plant is an important achievement for the Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company, in light of our tireless efforts to lead the waste-to-energy sector in the UAE through innovation and development. The successful testing and commissioning phase, followed by a fully operational launch phase, which will make Sharjah the first zero-waste city in the Middle East. We are well aware that this is a strategic step in our efforts to secure a future free of waste and based on clean energy not only at the state level, but also on the region and beyond.

For his part, Mohamed Jamil Al Ramahi, CEO of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, “Masdar,” said: “We are proud of our partnership with Bee’ah Group, as we have more than a decade and a half of long experience in the clean energy sector, which qualified us to launch the first project in the UAE to convert waste to energy, and with the construction phase of the project now complete. We look forward to harnessing our waste-to-energy knowledge to help meet the global climate challenge through sustainable waste management through clean energy solutions.”

It is worth noting that the Kneem Group, a French industrial contracting company, has built the new plant, which covers an area of 80,000 square meters and meets the requirements of the best technologies in the European Union, and in line with the strict environmental standards adopted around the world.

And about the operating mechanisms in this station, the non-recyclable waste is placed in the thermal waste boiler to generate high-pressure steam, which in turn contributes to the operation of the electric turbines, with an emphasis on the removal and purification of toxins and pollutants generated by that process.

On the other hand, the bottom ash is collected to re-extract the minerals and other components that can be used in construction and road works, while the fly ash is collected separately for scientific and safe treatment.

Next to the waste-to-energy plant is the multi-award winning Bee'ah Waste Management Complex managed by Bee'ah Recycling, the recycling and material recovery company of Bee'ah Group, which has, to date, diverted 76 per cent of Sharjah's waste away from landfills.

According to the plans, non-recyclable waste will be transferred from the complex to a waste-to-energy plant to be processed to produce clean energy.

Khalid Al Huraimel added, “The waste-to-energy plant, from the design stage and initial concepts until the completion of construction work, has proven its ability to apply sustainability standards and innovative design, and by moving today to the testing and operation stage, we will take into account these fundamental standards in the various work we do.”

While the CEO of Bee’ah Group stressed the positive effects of this plant on the level of clean energy in the region, saying: “We are absolutely confident that after completing the testing and successfully operating phase and launching the entire plant operations, we will be able to highlight the importance of converting waste to energy in supporting and enabling the economy.” recycling and treating non-recyclable waste and providing a low-carbon and costly alternative to traditional fossil fuels.”

In addition to diverting 300,000 tons of waste away from landfills, this 30-MW plant will contribute to avoiding approximately 450,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually and preserving the equivalent of 45 million cubic meters of natural gas.

And the CEO of the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, “Masdar,” said, “Through the Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company, Masdar and Bee’ah are pioneering a new clean energy innovation in the United Arab Emirates, and with the completion of construction at our first plant, we will soon demonstrate the effectiveness of this innovation.” We are working to replicate his success in other regions of the country and abroad.

For his part, Khalid Al Huraimel said: "We would like to emphasize that our plans are in line with the national and regional sustainability programs and the sustainable development goals of the United Nations in all our work, projects and partnerships. Our first goal is to build a future free of waste and based on clean energy for future generations, by Starting from the UAE, where we are fully committed to the strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, we are confident that the implementation of more of these innovative waste-to-energy solutions will play a crucial role in achieving our vision and leading the endeavors aimed at providing a sustainable life for all.”

It is noteworthy that the Emirates Waste-to-Energy Company was launched as a joint venture by two sustainability icons in the UAE, Bee’ah Group and “Masdar” with the aim of converting waste to energy across the country and the Middle East and North Africa region and leading waste-to-energy efforts.
