• The Chamber of Deputies knocks down AMLO's electrical reform

One day after his electrical reform made water in the Chamber of Deputies, the Mexican president,

Andrés Manuel López Obrador

, has appeared before the media in his daily press conference, popularly known as 'Mañaneras', to assess the legislative failure : "Yesterday

an act of betrayal of Mexico was committed by a group of legislators

who, instead of defending the interests of the people, of the nation, instead of defending what is public, became

defenders of foreign companies who are dedicated to prospering, to stealing,

and these deputies supported them, the looters, what happened is very unfortunate".

The proposed change in the regulatory framework of the electricity sector sought

to reverse the liberalization promoted by his predecessor Enrique Peña Nieto,

reserving at least

54% of the market for the state company Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE),

limiting the participation of the initiative private and opening the door to cancel previously signed contracts.

Finally, after a tense debate of more than 12 hours, the government initiative

only managed to add 275 of the 334 votes

it needed to move forward, thanks to the blockade of the opponents PRI, PAN, PRD and Citizen Movement, which deactivated the reform. constitutional with 222 supports.

"It was even embarrassing to see the PRI as a palero of the PAN, I don't know if you imagined that this was going to happen. Unfortunate, the party that emerged with the Revolution, now a palero of the PAN and, that of the PAN, as we have said in other Sometimes, it has some justification, because

that party emerged to defend foreign companies,

" López Obrador lamented.

The Mexican president has interpreted the opponents' refusal to support his reform with "that conservative thought that predominates, they prefer to be on good terms with the potentates."

The failure of the electrical reform represents a

partial defeat for López Obrador

since, on April 8, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation gave him important support by concluding that

the changes proposed

by the Government

are in accordance with the Constitution.

This circumstance will allow the Executive to have a solid legal guarantee to impose its ambitious energy project through small reforms.

Aware of the foreseeable defeat of the reform in the Chamber of Deputies, the president has been calm because "

we are preparing for the betrayal

, knew about the interests that are in question, very powerful interests, that's why a strategy was defined from the beginning, of how we were going to face the problem, to rescue the electricity and oil industry".

The Mexican president has publicly renounced trying to approve his reform again, delegating that responsibility to his successors at the head of the ruling Morena party: "I am not going to send another electricity reform initiative; not anymore because I have two years left in five months and those who come after must try (...)

we must recover the assets that the oligarchs gave to foreigners

".

Without giving time for reaction, Morena is going to present an initiative this Monday to meet another of the objectives of the frustrated electricity reform:

the nationalization of lithium.

On this occasion, since it is a simple modification of the Mining Law, the ruling party will have no problem in carrying it out, taking advantage of the simple majority that they still have.

The industry celebrates

The

Business Coordinating Council

(CCE) celebrated that yesterday the opposition legislators blocked in the Chamber of Deputies the electrical reform promoted by the president of Mexico.

"The CCE recognizes the responsibility that the federal legislators showed today in the debate on the electricity reform. In a democratic process, and within the institutional channels established by the legal framework, the legislators decided with their vote (... .)

The business sector stresses that it will continue to act with full respect for the law,

in support of the inclusive and sustainable development that the country requires," he added.

"Everyone's participation is required in the electricity sector: government, regulators, public and private companies, to achieve the effective benefit of Mexican families."

The CCE highlighted that among its affiliates it includes the industrial sector, which represents

60% of the country's electrical system

, and various companies that have developed and invested in electricity generation projects.
