For the BMW Group, this is another step towards its goal of creating the most sustainable supply chain in the automotive industry.

The transition applies in particular to the energy-intensive electrolysis used for the production of aluminium, as well as to the rim casting process, which until now together accounted for around 5% of the CO2 emissions of the supply chain.

The transition to more sustainable production based on green energy will reduce these emissions by more than half.

That said, aluminum has good recycling properties making it easier to melt old rims as part of the circular economy.

It is therefore no longer necessary to use energy-intensive electrolysis to produce the raw material.

Mini will become a pioneer in this area in 2023, when it will start using light-alloy wheels cast from 70% recycled aluminum in the new generation of the Countryman.

The combination of 100% green energy for production, and 70% recycled raw materials, achieves up to 80% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional manufacturing processes.
