Two experts in the insurance sector said that there is a difference between the “tolerance rate” and the “depreciation rate” in the unified insurance policy, and both are borne by the insured who caused the accident.

They explained to "Emirates Today" that these two percentages are specified within the terms of the document, noting that the value of the "endurance ratio" was set according to the type of car within a unified table, while the "consumption rate" ranged between 5 and 30% of the value of the car repair.

"Emirates Today" had received complaints from dealers about the imposition of comprehensive insurance companies, a "consumption rate", in addition to the "endurance rate" stipulated in the document, stressing that they were not aware of the "consumption rate" except when an accident occurred.

“Endurance” and “Consumption”

The head of the accidents department at Al-Buhaira Insurance Company, Suleiman Dhaher, said that “the (endurance rate) is specified in the unified insurance policy, according to a specific schedule, according to the type of car, the age of the driver, and other conditions written within the terms of the document.”

He added: "As for the (consumption rate), it differs from it, and ranges between 5 and 30% of the value of the car's repair, and it is imposed on the insured, in case he was the cause of the accident, and asked to repair his car using new, original spare parts."

He pointed out that the "consumption rate" was also determined by the Central Bank (formerly the Insurance Authority), and the insurance company estimated it within the specified ratio between 5 and 30%.

He explained: «If, for example, the car is four years old, and the insured asks to repair it using new spare parts, then 20% of the value of the spare parts is imposed, in which the insured participates, in addition to the endurance rate, as long as it was the cause of the accident, so as not to The insurance companies bear the entire loss.

And Daher continued: "If the insured does not request the use of original spare parts, and no used parts are available, the insurance company here is forced to use new original spare parts, and bear their cost."

Causing the accident

For his part, Issam Maslamani, an expert in the insurance sector, said that “the consumption of spare parts is deducted from compensation, according to the unified insurance policy, and there is a unified schedule used by companies.”

He continued, "There are companies that do not apply it, and bear the full percentage on behalf of the insured, especially if the repair of his car is still within the agency, but there are many other companies that impose a percentage of consumption on the insured who caused the accident."

Al-Maslamani stressed that the “consumption ratio” pertains to new spare parts, and the insured can exempt himself from them, if he requests the use of original spare parts, but not new, as a compromise.
