The European Commission has proposed new sanctions and embargoes on Russia as part of the fifth package of measures in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's army.

Thus, they are considering establishing an embargo on coal imports to the European Union from Russia and closing European ports to ships operated by Russians.

The massacre of the town of Bucha, located on the outskirts of Kiev and described as genocide by the Ukrainian president Volodímir Zelenski, has made Brussels consider "it is clearly necessary to increase our pressure even more", according to the Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, in statements collected by

.

For his part, the economic vice-president of the European Commission, Valdis Dombrovskis, pointed out at a press conference after the meeting of EU Economy and Finance Ministers that the fifth package of sanctions "is not only about energy but also includes broad sectors such as personal sanctions, trade, the transport sector and also sanctions that affect the energy sector, mainly coal".

"It is also vital that EU countries coordinate and work together," Dombrovskis detailed in his speech, "to make sure sanctions are executed quickly and correctly."

In any case, these sanctions on the energy sector will be applied according to a calendar that has not yet been defined, as explained by the French Finance Minister, Bruno Le Maire.

The leader expressed the willingness of the French presidency of the EU to increase sanctions against Russia "which are the most severe that the EU has ever put in place."
