The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, visited Barakah Nuclear Energy Plants, where she was briefed on the progress in the development process of the plants, their contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of the energy sector in the UAE, and supporting its efforts to achieve the goals of the country’s strategic initiative for climate neutrality 2050. She emphasized that increasing The share of clean energy in the total domestic energy mix constitutes a main pillar to support the UAE's efforts to meet the challenge of climate change.

Al Muhairi was also briefed on the latest developments during the development process of the Barakah plants, and toured a number of plant facilities, where she met the work teams led by Emirati competencies, responsible for operating and maintaining the first peaceful nuclear power plants in the Arab world, which is one of the most important pillars of sustainable development in UAE.

Al Muhairi listened to an explanation of the work progress of the first and second stations in Barakah, which began commercial operations in April 2021 and March 2022, respectively, and produce abundant and environmentally friendly electrical energy around the clock.

Al Muhairi said that increasing the share of clean energy in the total local energy mix constitutes a main pillar to support the UAE’s efforts to confront the challenge of climate change and its work system to promote the transition towards a green, low-carbon economy and achieve sustainable economic development, in line with the objectives of the Emirates Strategic Initiative to strive to achieve Climate Neutrality 2050.

She added: "The Barakah plants are one of the most important projects supporting the adoption of clean energy, due to their effective role in reducing the rate of greenhouse gas emissions, and thus reducing the carbon footprint, which confirms the state's commitment to supporting and strengthening climate action efforts, and achieving the goals of the Climate Neutrality 2050 initiative."

For his part, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said: “The Barakah plants are among the most prominent contributors to achieving the goals of the Climate Neutrality Initiative, and we are committed to continuing to reduce the carbon footprint of the energy sector in the coming years, while looking forward to the future through the completion of the two plants. third and fourth, and to continue developing the peaceful nuclear energy sector in the UAE for decades to come.”

Completion rate

It is noteworthy that the overall completion rate at Barakah stations has reached more than 96%.

Once fully operational, the four Barakah plants will produce up to a quarter of the UAE's electricity needs and will reduce 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually.

By 2025, Barakah plants will provide 85% of the environment-friendly electricity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and will be the largest contributor to reducing the carbon footprint in the emirate by 50%.
