Much less known than underfloor heating or connected radiators, which are increasingly popular, the baseboard heater is a discreet, ecological and decorative system, since it fits into any interior.

Popularized in Canada, this design equipment frees the walls of overly imposing installations, while ensuring thermal comfort in the house.

Walls that heat up

The operation of baseboard heaters is rather simple: they combine convection, inertia and radiation.

The cold air from the ground will gain in temperature in contact with the skirting board to rise and heat the walls like the objects.

The latter will then restore the heat accumulated by radiation.

This system has several advantages.

First, unlike a heated floor, the heat will be diffuse and homogeneous.

Then, the heating of the partitions will make it possible to avoid the phenomenon of cold walls, and therefore condensation and mould.

Say goodbye to humidity and freezing houses in winter.

Finally, the system is discreet and very compact.

Hydraulic or electric?

There are two types of baseboard heaters.

The hydraulic models, made up of copper pipes, work thanks to the circulation of hot water.

They are usually connected to a boiler or a heat pump.

Depending on your energy needs, you can choose high or low temperature versions.

Electric baseboard heaters are made with resistors whose aluminum coating allows the diffusion of heat.

The power emitted can range from 220 to 400 W per linear meter.

Sober and available in different colors and aspects, baseboard heaters fit into different styles of decoration (stone, wood, marble, etc.).

Installation

Baseboard heaters are not as easy to install as a traditional radiator.

Their manufacture is always made to measure and is calculated according to the volume of the room, its exposure, its insulation, the glazed surface and, of course, heating habits.

The calculations must be made by professionals, as undersizing could affect the operation of the heater.

Do not undertake the work yourself if you are not sufficiently qualified.

Like almost any heating system, baseboard heaters can be equipped with a wireless thermostat to manage its energy consumption.

In all cases, they save up to 30% on the heating bill, knowing that this system costs between 100 and 150 euros per linear meter.
