Employees of the online mail order company Amazon have voted for the establishment of a union representation at the group in the USA.

According to the count on Friday, the vote by the employees of an Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, New York state, resulted in a majority of 2,654 to 2,131 votes.

Amazon has opposed the formation of unions for years.

To date, no Amazon subsidiary in the US has managed to form a union.

In April last year, a first such attempt at a logistics center in Bessemer, Alabama, failed.

A large majority of employees voted against employee representation.

In November, however, the NLRB upheld an appeal by a union that had accused Amazon of improper influence and rule violations.

The result of the vote was therefore annulled and a new vote was scheduled.

In Bessemer, however, a majority is likely to be missed again, as became apparent on Thursday.

In the JFK8 camp in Staten Island, however, there was now a majority - and with it a historic first.

Amazon is criticized in the US for working conditions.

Trade unions and politicians criticize that the employees of the group founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 are exposed to high work pressure and constant monitoring.

In Germany, the Verdi union has been fighting for years to ensure that Amazon employees get a collective agreement and are paid according to the tariff for retail and mail order.
