• Tourism The Imserso now drags Benidorm: its delay subtracts 6,000 tourists and the hotels denounce the low prices

After the stoppage forced by the pandemic, the

Imserso travel program

for the elderly resumed this year.

But it did so late, at half gas and with a good part of the hotel sector at odds with the Government due to low prices.

In a city like Benidorm, where Imserso was key to reactivating tourism in the low season months -and more so after the pandemic shock-, businessmen have already warned that economic conditions were beginning to not compensate them.

And all this, however, without the current unstoppable rise in prices even appearing on the horizon.

So

if the Imserso was already in deficit before the pandemic, now it is "technically and economically unfeasible"

, according to Toni Mayor, president of the Hosbec hotel management association based in the tourist capital of Alicante.

The sector therefore calls for changes "urgently" in the face of the escalation in energy or food prices, but also due to the rise in labor costs.

That is to say, that in the Government's package of measures to deal with the economic crisis derived from the war in Ukraine, a "reformulation of Imserso for the next annual installments" is included.

The demand from hoteliers is clear: a larger budget allocation and price adjustments to make it "viable" for the future.

Hosbec maintains that the numbers support this claim that, although it comes from afar, is now even more important given the current context of crisis.

The calculations of the employer's association estimate that, despite the fact that in last year's contest a remuneration was established for the participating hotels of

22 euros per overnight stay

- reductions in the tender price were reported -, what it actually cost them ranged between 27 and 33 euros on average.

This, according to the economic reports of 2020, which by then spoke of a gap of 25%.

Runaway

inflation

has already left these figures outdated, as Hosbec calculates that for hotels the cost of each Imserso overnight stay may have increased by an average of 20%, to a range of between 32 and 40 euros.

Result:

"The Imserso will not find hotels that can work at those prices"

, warned Mayor, who even speaks of the Government's "stinginess" with Spanish hoteliers.

“Now it is more profitable to close than to work with these losses that can no longer be endured,” he has sentenced, emulating the carriers.

The threat is none other than an ultimatum: either the Government raises the prices of Imserso or it may be forced into an

upcoming public tender that is deserted

due to lack of interest from the sector.
