Shanghai, a city of 27 million inhabitants, has been half-locked since Monday and for another three days to allow screening of its entire population.

A drastic measure taken by the town hall while the economic capital of China concentrates 70% of the contaminations.

China's "zero Covid" strategy is being put to the test in Shanghai where the number of new cases continues to grow.

The city of 27 million inhabitants, the economic capital of the country, has even been subject since Monday to strict confinement in two stages in order to allow the screening of its entire population.

70% of contaminations with the Omicron variant

Concretely, half of the city has been confined since Monday, and the other half will be in three days.

A measure taken while the city concentrates 70% of contamination with the Omicron variant.

"I panic a little", even recognizes this inhabitant crossed by Europe 1. "I am not optimistic to be honest, I did not think it would be so serious. Every detail of our life, the clothing, the food, the daily life or travel are affected."

And when the measure was announced, residents rushed to stock up.

“I saw a lot of people in the shops, especially for vegetables,” confirms Simon, a French expatriate.

"We can clearly see that there is a great concern, we feel that there is really a fear of the people of Shanghai."
