Tesla CEO Elon Musk is considering launching a new social media platform.

"I'm seriously considering it," the billionaire wrote on Twitter on Sunday.

He was responding to a Twitter user's question.

Musk asked if he would consider building a social media platform that uses an open-source algorithm and emphasizes freedom of expression while keeping propaganda to a minimum.

Musk, who spends a lot of time on Twitter himself and has more than 79 million followers there, has recently been critical of the social media platform.

The company undermines democracy by not adhering to the principles of freedom of expression.

Musk's push comes a day after he released a Twitter poll.

In it, he asked users if they believed Twitter adhered to the principle of freedom of expression.

70 percent answered this with "No".

"The implications of this poll will be important," Musk wrote on Friday.

"Please vote carefully."

There have already been several attempts to compete with established platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Google's YouTube - so far without much success.

Neither the “Truth Social” founded by ex-President Donald Trump, nor the Twitter competitors Gettr and Parler or the video website Rumble have come close to reaching the reach and popularity of the established providers.
