The price of a kilo of cowpeas in Lebanon is 130 thousand pounds, and a plate of tabbouleh costs 50 thousand

The Lebanese are now taking "selfies" with vegetables and then continuing on their way, without the temptation to buy them.

Without thinking, of course, to talk about fruit, that is very far-fetched.

The prices of vegetables in Lebanon recorded an unprecedented rise, in parallel with the dollar and fuel jumps against the background of local crises and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

In a phenomenon that is the first of its kind, the price of a kilo of cucumbers reached 30 thousand Lebanese pounds, while the price of a kilo of tomatoes reached 25 thousand pounds in some stores.

A few days before the advent of the month of Ramadan, the Lebanese feared the repercussions of the war and the global fuel crisis on the one hand, and the instability of the dollar exchange rate on the parallel market on the other.

In the vegetable market in the capital, Youssef, who is from Beirut, said: "This year is not like another year. People pass by vegetable boxes asking for the price and continue their walk. One plate of tabbouleh now costs 50,000 Lebanese pounds."

He explained: "For a citizen with an ordinary income, it has become almost impossible and unacceptable. Prices vary from day to day."

A store owner said: "The price of a kilo of cowpeas has reached 120 or 130 thousand Lebanese pounds. Passersby take pictures of prices with cowpeas and display them on social media. They are satisfied with that."

For his part, the head of the Consumer Protection Association, Zuhair Berro, said that "when the dollar price fell from 34,000 pounds to 20,000 pounds, this drop was artificial, implemented by the Banque du Liban to anticipate the upcoming parliamentary elections and pass the stage with some stability, and this matter cost the Bank of Lebanon hundreds of millions of dollars, interfering." In the money market to curb the price of the dollar without any real change to address the already deteriorating economic situation in Lebanon.

Berro added, in a statement to “Sky News Arabia”: “It seems that with the banks’ move and pressure on the Governor of the Banque du Liban, the dollar has returned to rise, and this is what we expected and said at the time that the matter needs a radical treatment of the economic problems and the crisis situation.”

The official concluded by saying: “This path is the result of economic policies that have not changed, and what happened was a game with the dollar to reduce its price in a limited way, and the prices of goods decreased by only 4 percent, while the price of the dollar declined at that time by 42 percent, and this means that major traders kept prices high in a manner Big because they will not risk reducing the prices of consumer goods and foodstuffs, and they are well aware that the decline is artificial and will not last so that the dollar will rise again, so they pay the price from their balances.”
