Swiss food company Nestle halted sales of most of its products in Ukraine after Russia invaded Ukraine.

KitKat chocolate bars, Nesquik cocoa drinks and other brands will no longer be sold in Russia, the world market leader announced on Wednesday.

Only basic foods such as baby food as well as medical and hospital-specific nutrition should be provided.

"This means that we will stop most of our pre-war volume in Russia," said a spokesman for the group.

Nestle says it has already halted all non-essential imports and exports to and from Russia, halted all advertising and suspended all capital investment in the country.

"We don't expect to make any profits or pay taxes in Russia in the foreseeable future, but any profits will be donated to humanitarian aid organizations," said the group from Vevey on Lake Geneva.

Nestle has recently faced fierce criticism from consumers, activist groups and politicians for not fully withdrawing from Russia following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"We stand with the people of Ukraine and our 5,800 employees there," Nestle said.

The company intends to continue paying wages to its Russian employees.
