The 61st Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges wine sale, little sister of the famous Hospices de Beaune auctions, set a new record on Sunday, despite a low harvest due to late frost last year.

The bids for the first time exceeded 2 million euros, (2.486 precisely, excluding costs), up almost 30% compared to last year.

"It's exceptional," said Alain Cartron, mayor of Nuits-Saint-Georges, to the applause of the crowd gathered at the Château de Clos de Vougeot, headquarters of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, named after the medieval cup of tasting.

Despite a low harvest

However, only 109 barrels (228-litre barrels) were offered for sale this year, due to the late frost which devastated the vines last April, cutting the harvest by around half.

Last year, the 60th sale had reached the total sum of 1.9 million euros, for 114 pieces.

This year, the average price of the piece has therefore also reached a record, at 22,481 euros for the reds, an increase of almost 35% compared to 2021 (16,687 euros), and 58,000 for the only white piece, i.e. a surge of 115% over 2021 (27,000 euros).

The Nuits auctions sell wine for the benefit of the hospital and the retirement home managed by the Hospices of the famous wine-growing village.

Just like Beaune, the Hospices de Nuits is indeed a “vineyard hospital”: the medical service is financed by an estate of 12 hectares of vines donated over the centuries.

Soaring prices which also benefit the Hospices de Beaune

At the same time, the Hospices de Nuits traditionally reserve a cask for the benefit of an association.

This “Piece of Charity” was sold for 41,460 euros for the benefit of APF France Handicap, the main French organization for defending the rights and supporting people with disabilities.

In 2021, the “charity coin” went to 49,380 euros.

Last November, the famous auctions of the Hospices de Beaune had also experienced a surge in prices, with a total result of 11.7 million euros (excluding fees) or an average soaring price per piece of 85%.

"There is of course a very strong demand for Burgundy wines", acknowledged François Poher, director of the Hospices Civils de Nuits and Beaune.
