Although the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food,
Luis Planas
, assures that
the food supply is "absolutely guaranteed"
, the Government plans to issue a
resolution
shortly to lift the technical restrictions and thus facilitate
the arrival of cereal as soon as possible, especially corn, from Argentina.
This decision comes after the
Permanent Committee for Plants, Animals, Food and Feed of the EU
authorized last Friday the Member States to "
relax the maximum limits of phytosanitary residues
" that prevented the importance of raw materials such as
sunflower cake or maize
available in the South American country, "within the full guarantee and security of agri-food trade," says the minister.
In this sense, Planas has revealed that he has had a "very positive" and "constructive" conversation with
his Argentine counterpart, Julián Andrés Domínguez
, to "give support" to this series of measures between the two countries and thus unblock, due to the exceptional situation current, the current phytosanitary requirements that
limited the arrival of a greater volume of imports
of this sector to Spain from Argentina.
Ukraine
is the
largest supplier of corn for Spain
, with
30% of imports
, with a total of more than
2.8 million tons per year
, worth
460 million euros
, being the second world destination for exports Ukrainians in this sector.
It is also in
wheat, barley or beans
, which add up to another 383 million, for the manufacture of feed for livestock, in a market that also affects manure and fertilizers.
FALLOW LANDS
In addition, Planas opened the door to
planting crops such as corn and rice on fallow land in the
face of the worrying effects of the
scarcity of cereals due to the war
.
The proposal was presented on Sunday in La Palma by the president of the Junta de Extremadura,
Guillermo Fernández Vara
, at the Conference of Presidents, and the minister values the possibility of temporarily relaxing the conditions of mandatory crop rotations and have the possibility of sowing maize under certain conditions, as well as using fallow land or areas of ecological interest.
In any case, for the minister "it is much more significant and a priority to
import from other markets of origin
than what we can increase quantitatively."
All this will have to be assessed in different meetings in the coming days in
Brussels
for its final approval, the last one by the Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries scheduled for next Monday in Brussels.
Planas, in addition, also expects progress in terms of
imports from the United States.
Regarding
fertilizers
, the minister has indicated that although the EU is dependent on imports in this matter, Spain is the community country with the greatest "autonomy" because half of what it consumes is produced in our own territory.
Thus, Planas has insisted on the need to
advance in agri-food autonomy
to avoid "bottlenecks", especially in the production of vegetable proteins and agricultural inputs.
