In the discussion about a fuel price brake, the Union called for relief of at least 40 cents per liter.

Group Vice Jens Spahn (CDU) said on Monday in the ARD "Morgenmagazin" after announcements of relief plans from the coalition: "We are excited.

It has to be at least 40 cents per liter and it has to be unbureaucratic.”

In view of the sharp rise in petrol and diesel prices in the wake of the Ukraine war, the CDU and CSU had spoken out in favor of reducing mineral oil and value-added tax on fuel prices.

According to a report in the "Bild" newspaper, Vice Chancellor and Minister of Finance Christian Lindner (FDP) is planning a state fuel subsidy.

The total amount should therefore be deducted when paying.

Lindner continues to reject a temporary reduction in VAT from 19 to seven percent for diesel and petrol.

"If the Union calls for a so-called fuel price brake, then they have to say what they want to cut in the budget," Lindner told the Tagesspiegel newspaper (Sunday).

"Or they have to admit that they are willing to take on new debts."

However, the government is working on measures, Lindner told the German Press Agency.

He assumes that further decisions will be made "soon".

The high prices are a burden for people and companies, the state must not leave people alone.

“As a liberal finance minister, I spoke out in favor of structural tax relief even before the crisis.

Now, however, we need quick and flexible solutions that really get through to people.”

Lindner also told the Tagesspiegel that the Treasury would not get rich from the rising fuel prices.

If a higher proportion of a household's disposable income is spent on fuel, there is only a shift.

"People then hold back with consumption elsewhere."

No matter how you design a fuel price brake, whether it is a tax cut or a discount model, these are ultimately technical questions, said the first parliamentary director of the Union parliamentary group, Thorsten Frei (CDU), on Monday on Deutschlandfunk.

One is willing to talk “about all possible models”.

It is crucial that citizens and businesses are relieved at the petrol pump.

Since the start of the Ukraine war a good two weeks ago, fuel prices have increased dramatically.

They have risen to well over 2 euros per liter.
