The president of the United States,

Joe Biden

, has asked the Congress of that country

to give Russia the same consideration in terms of trade as Cuba and North Korea

.

Not even Iran, which until the invasion of Ukraine was the country with the most economic sanctions in the world - a position that Russia has taken from it - will be in a similar situation if the US legislature agrees to the president's request.

Furthermore, and on a more symbolic level than anything else,

Biden has banned imports of Russian caviar, vodka, seafood and diamonds.

The toughest measure is the

change of the trade regime

.

Biden wants Russia to lose the status of 'most favored nation', which opens the door for

Russian goods that are not subject to sanctions to

have, at least in theory,

much higher tariffs than

those applied to other countries.

Canada already made a similar decision last week.

In any case,

only 5% of Russian exports go to the US.

Moscow's main trading partner is the EU, which accounts for a third of Russian sales abroad.

Brussels has declared that it is considering adopting a measure similar

to that of Washington but for the moment it has not done so.

In a televised intervention from the White House, Biden has also announced that the G7 countries will work to

close Russia any source of financing

from international financial institutions such as the

International Monetary Fund (IMF)

and the

World Bank (WB).

"

Putin is the aggressor and he must pay the price for it

. He cannot continue to take actions that threaten the foundations of international peace and stability and then ask for financial help from the international community," said the US president, in statements collected by EFE.

Despite having been announced by Biden, the withdrawal of the so-called "Most Favored Nation" deal to Russia must be

approved by the US Congress

, something that is expected to go ahead without problem

with both Democratic and Republican support.

This is one of the fundamental principles of international trade that the

World Trade Organization (WTO)

watches over , and Ukraine and Canada have already withdrawn it from Russia.

According to the White House, the rest of the member countries of the G7 and the European Union (EU) will also follow the same steps.
