• The Conforama store in the Hauts d'Antibes economic activity zone has been closed since 2019.

  • In 2020, the distribution brand bought the land and decided to build "the largest Lidl in France" there.

  • Problems: this desire requires thinking about the accessibility of the site and in particular, the development of the road network.

Studies are then carried out with the Sophia Antipolis Agglomeration Community.

The building permit has just been filed and is under review.

The jails and the graffiti will soon have to disappear with the building which had become "a wart", in the words of Alexandre Follot, deputy director general (DGA) planning and economic development of the Casa (Community of agglomeration Sophia Antipolis).

The former Conforama in the Hauts d'Antibes economic activity zone should give way to the "largest Lidl in France" by spring 2024.

Lidl bought in 2020 the location of the furniture store, closed since 2019, even if there is already a sign of the “No. 1 in food discount” “400 m as the crow flies”.

Alexandre Follot develops: “Currently, the sales area of the supermarket is 436 m2.

For the construction of the next one, 1,940 m2 are planned, with 257 parking spaces.

Three accesses for the site

For this "pharaonic" project, it was "necessary" to think about traffic and urban planning, hence the involvement of the Casa and the two-year delay in the initial plan to open the brand.

The agglomeration community teams ran simulators: With Lidl's estimate of bringing in 2,000 customers a day, a flow of 190 vehicles would circulate in and out during rush hour.

“We worked a lot with the group on this aspect, continues the representative of the Casa.

To facilitate traffic, there will therefore be three access points for the site.

It's already dense today, we needed a fluidity of the system.

The construction of new road developments will then concern the rue du Bon-Air and the Voie Lyan.

These works, which "will not cause any disruption in the ZAE" assures the deputy director, are planned between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2024, "subject to the issuance of the building permit, which was filed at the end of 2021".

Nearly 5.5 million jobs

As for the store, "which will be in the new architectural lines", the German company plans "a commercial opening in the spring of 2024".

And to carry it out, the cost of the work is estimated at nearly 5.5 million euros.

A partnership urban project (PUP) between Lidl, the city and the Casa should be signed soon.

Alexandre Follot adds: “Of the 5.5 million euros, Lidl has undertaken to pay 5 million.

»

He concludes: “On the operational aspect, we look favorably on this takeover of the site.

Lidl has become the leading low-cost brand in France.

It responds to a request for a place that makes sense.

And it will create jobs in addition to preserving those taken over from the former Conforama.
