Germany records a new price jump for diesel and super gasoline

Fuel prices in Germany recorded a new jump.

And the German General Automobile Club (ADAC) announced today, Wednesday, that the price of diesel yesterday reached an average in Germany of 2.150 euros, an increase of 12 cents compared to the day before yesterday.

The price of a liter of super E10 gasoline yesterday averaged in Germany 2.103 euros, an increase of about 10 cents compared to the day before yesterday.

The club stated that the price of diesel rose by 39.4 cents in one week, while the price of super gasoline rose in a week by 27.6 cents.

The main reason for the rise so far has been oil prices, which rose in the wake of the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

A strong dollar amplifies the effect as oil is traded in dollars and German buyers pay in euros.

Added to this is the unusually strong demand for heating oil.

Even before Russia's war against Ukraine, fuel prices in Germany had risen to record levels.

The increase in the annual comparison was huge: in March 2021 the cost of a liter of diesel was 1,315 euros, and a liter of super gasoline 1,434 euros.

With this rise in prices, voices are getting louder, demanding lessening the burdens.

"In the short term, the German government should consider implementing a temporary value-added tax cut on fuel and heating oil," said Gerhard Hillebrand, president of the German Automobile Club. "This could have an immediate impact and reduce the burden on a large scale."
