Telefónica has signed "a collaboration with Meta to expand and jointly explore new ways of promoting innovation in connectivity and technology in the field of the metaverse", as announced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) by Chema Alonso, Chief Digital Officer of the Spanish multinational.
At the same time, the Spanish company opens a global call this Tuesday, through Wayra, in search of startups focused on projects related to the metaverse.
Open2metaverse
, as the initiative is called, is running to accelerate the growth of companies dedicated to aspects related to the metaverse, such as connectivity, devices, virtual platforms, identity tools, marketplaces and NFTs (units of value or non-exchangeable tokens).
The agreement with Meta, an American company known until last year as Facebook, involves the establishment of a metaverse innovation center to "accelerate the readiness of the metaverse network and devices" as well as to develop "metaverse experience use cases." .
This
Metaverse Innovation Hub
will be a test bed for local startups and developers, who will be able to use the Spanish operator's 5G laboratory and the resources of the Telefónica Innovation and Talent Hub announced last October.
This center plans to train 100,000 people at the Telefónica headquarters in Madrid, thanks to an investment of 100 million euros until 2024.
The selection of the pioneering companies will be carried out by Wayra, an area of Telefónica promoted personally by its current executive president, José María Álvarez-Pallete.
This springboard to scale (give size to startups with proven potential for success) invested 6.7 million euros in 49 startups last year.
"Telefónica sees the metaverse as
an evolution of the internet supported by a set of technologies that are transforming the digital economy
such as augmented reality and virtual reality, the creation of new value assets such as NFTs, business models based on web3 architectures [the next step of the web, based on tokens and with less centralized construction] and cryptocurrencies."
In fact, to bring together all the activities of the Telefónica Group around the metaverse, the company has created a unit led by
Yaiza Rubio as Chief Metaverse Officer.
