The Executive approved last Tuesday the increase in the

Minimum Interprofessional Salary (SMI)

to

1,000 euros

with retroactive effect from January 1 and reiterated its intention to continue raising it until it coincides with

60% of the average salary in Spain

, in order to comply with the European Social Charter signed by Spain and also with one of the objectives of the coalition government program.

As the group of experts

brought together by the Minister of Labor,

Yolanda Díaz

, has already confirmed

, to advise her on the path of increases, the real difficulty when deciding how much to increase the SMI to make it coincide with 60% of the average salary is precisely in

determine what is the average salary in the country.

"Salary is one of the most important economic determinants, however,

there is no optimal source to estimate the average salary,

since all available sources suffer from pros and cons," they acknowledged when they presented their report in June 2021. To To be able to estimate it, they had to start from outdated data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), from 2019, and prepare a calculation.

According to this,

raising the SMI to 60% of the average salary

would mean increasing it to

1,011 euros in 2023

-if the average salary remained unchanged-, up to

1,027 euros

-if in 2020 it had risen by 0.9 %- or

up to 1,049 euros

-if in 2020 the average salary had risen by 1.8%-.

All this without taking into account the increases in the average salary that could take place in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Although there is still no official data from the INE on the evolution of the average salary in the last year, the human resources consultant

Adecco

does already have an estimate.

According to their records, presented this Thursday,

the average salary in the country stood at 1,749 euros per month

last year, a historical record for this indicator but whose purchasing power was significantly reduced by the blow of inflation.

If the average salary amounts to 1,749 euros in twelve payments or 1,500 euros in fourteen, the current Minimum Interprofessional Salary of 1,000 euros in fourteen payments or 1,166.66 euros per month

is already equivalent to 66.7% of the average salary.

"

I wish it were as easy to raise the average wage as it is to raise the minimum wage," economist

José Antonio Herce

commented on Twitter

when he learned of the minister's intention to raise the SMI to 1,000 euros.

"For the second, a Royal Decree Law is enough, for the first, the knowledge, discipline and excellence of the entire society are needed.

At this rate, one day, the minimum wage will equal the average wage.

Although it may seem so, it is not impossible , at least from the point of view of mathematics", he said in reference to the growing proportion that the SMI represents with respect to the average salary.

territorial gap

Although the average gross salary is 1,749 euros, there are

significant differences between autonomous communities

, according to Adecco, with a gap that exceeds 600 euros difference.

The

Community of Madrid

is the region with the

highest average payroll, of 2,071 euros per month,

followed by

the Basque Country

(2,047 euros), the Foral Community of

Navarra

(1,887) and

Catalonia

(1,868).

They are the only four communities with a record above the national average.

On the opposite side are

Canarias

(with an average salary of 1,402 euros),

Extremadura

(1,418 euros), the Region of

Murcia

(1,541) and

Andalusia

(1,557 euros).

This means that in all the communities in which the average salary is at medium and low levels,

the SMI already exceeds 60% of that indicator.

Specifically, this is already happening

in all regions except Madrid and the Basque Country,

where 60% of the average salary would be equivalent to 1,242 euros and 1,228 euros respectively per month (or 1,065 euros in fourteen payments in the case of Madrid and 1,052 in the Basque Country). ).

In Navarra, the next with a higher average salary, 60% would be equivalent to 1,132 euros per month or 970.4 euros in fourteen payments.

With which here the SMI of 1,000 euros already exceeds that 60%.
