Following the Russian military invasion, some Japanese companies are moving to shut down factories in Ukraine.

According to Sumitomo Electric Industries, which is headquartered in Osaka, the operation of the factory in the west was temporarily suspended from the 25th of Japan time in order to ensure the safety of employees due to the military invasion of Ukraine by Russia.



Approximately 6,000 employees are working at this factory, and the company has decided that it is necessary to ensure the safety of its employees.

It is said that no Japanese employees are stationed locally.



The factory produces electric wires for automobiles, and the company is discussing with the automobile manufacturer about future measures such as whether alternative production is possible in other countries.

JT = Japan Tobacco has shut down its tobacco manufacturing plant in central Ukraine from the 24th.



There are about 900 employees in Ukraine including this factory and sales office, but there are no Japanese, foreign employees have already evacuated abroad, and Ukrainian employees are waiting at home or working from home. It means that the company has confirmed the safety.



At the factory, some cigar cigarette products for Japan were manufactured, but the timing for resuming operations is undecided, and for the time being, it will be handled by inventory.



Fujikura, which produces parts for automobiles at its Ukrainian plant, has announced that it will suspend production at the plant until the end of this month.



According to the company, a factory in the central city of Ribiu in the west near the border with Poland produces parts called wire harnesses that bundle electric wires, but after the invasion of the Russian army, the factory stopped operation. It means that we instructed about 1400 employees to wait at home.



Although there are no Japanese expatriates, the company is also considering temporarily consolidating production at factories in neighboring countries so that the parts supply network = supply chain is not affected.



On the other hand, among domestic automobile manufacturers, Toyota Motor and Nissan Motor have sales bases in Ukraine.
