The blue diamond has an estimated price of more than 48 million US dollars (380 million Hong Kong dollars), a 15.10 carat graduated blue diamond, and the largest vivid blue diamond ever to appear at auction, a statement said.

According to the release, such important blue diamonds are exceptionally rare, with only five examples of diamonds over 10 carats ever auctioning.

The De Beers Cullinan Blue will be the centerpiece for Sotheby's during Hong Kong Luxury Week, and will be offered at a live stand-alone auction for this piece at the end of April 2022.

The statement confirmed that the diamond will be revealed before the auction, at the Dubai Diamond Exchange, as it will be shown to the public at Sotheby's Dubai Hall in the Dubai International Financial Center from February 23 to 25.

Formative years

Sotheby's Asia President Patti Wong said: "Regardless of the type, blue diamonds are rare on the market, and this is the rarest type. We haven't seen any diamonds of this caliber yet auctioned in recent years."

She added, "This diamond took hundreds of millions of years in the process of formation, and it is a brilliant blue diamond and one of the most beautiful things created by nature. It has now been revived by one of the most skilled diamond cutting experts in the world. It is a captivating and rare masterpiece as the most desired work of art by many." .

Blue diamonds are among the rarest types of colored diamonds.

Although other colored diamonds can be found in mines around the world, there are very few sources of blue diamonds, and most of them are from the legendary "Cullinan Mine" in South Africa.

The Cullinan Mine has produced many of the most famous diamonds in the world, including the Great Star of Africa, which weighs 530 carats, the largest colorless diamond in the world, and is currently in the Tower of London, and is attached to the Imperial scepter of Great Britain.
