In the second year of the pandemic and partly thanks to the reactivation of tourism and travel, Aena reduced its losses by half, to 60 million euros,

compared to the 126 million it had had in 2020,

but still far of the 1,440 million that it had earned before the health crisis broke out, in 2019.

The airport manager has notified its results this Wednesday to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), which reveal an improvement compared to 2020 but have nothing to do with the numbers prior to the pandemic.

In 2021 there

was "a progressive increase in passenger traffic"

, up to 120 million, which means having recovered 44% of the traffic that was in 2019. In this calculation Aena includes Luton airports, in London, and also the six that operates in Brazil.

The group's income

increased by 6.7% compared to last year

, to 2,393 million, but is still 50% below what it had in 2019. Aeronautical income (1,332 million) grew by 35.1% with compared to 2020, while commercial income (799.2 million) has experienced a decrease of 23.6%.

This has been in part due to the lower revenue from commercial income charged to operators of duty-free activities, shops, restaurants and vending machines in the airports it manages.

As a consequence of the pandemic, and after a strong controversy with these operators, Aena was forced to lower the rents for its

tenants

.

The reduction of these rents amounted to 727 million euros in October 2021

and the estimated amount of total reduction throughout the life of these contracts is estimated at 1,300 million euros, according to Aena.

As for the gross operating result, it was 644.8 million, which represents a decrease of 9.8% compared to 2020, while the financial debt has increased to 7,446.3 million, compared to 7,030.9 million of 2020.
