The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology has begun to develop legislation and the legal framework regulating the use of self-driving cars in the country, which includes the characteristics and requirements of self-driving cars in the local market, and to allow their use in public and private transport in the country.

Khaled Abdul Majeed, explained in a seminar organized by the ministry yesterday, on “Emirates Specifications: Self-Driving Vehicles”, that these requirements, which are currently under development, include ensuring the ability of self-driving cars to deal with phenomena. Surrounding the vehicle, such as other cars on the road, traffic lights, tunnels and bridges, the requirements also include verifying the compliance of self-driving cars with the country’s traffic regulations, adherence to current best practices and standards for electronic security, and that the car is able to record and save the various required data, adding, Safety systems in self-driving cars must take into account the application of various safety conditions on the streets, protect car occupants and other road users, in the event of any accident, while trying to avoid any accident before it occurs, and help the driver reduce its effects.

Abdul Majeed stressed that “the ministry sets the requirements, but the implementing agency is the self-driving car factories, as it is responsible for conducting the tests that confirm the fulfillment of the requirements contained in the ministry’s legislation, as well as the ministry’s request for factories to conduct complete applied tests that test the efficiency of self-driving cars, and prove their complete conformity. according to government requirements, and that the car is able to handle all eventualities correctly while on the street.”

He pointed out that «the use of self-driving cars in the UAE is of great importance, because it leads to the reduction of human errors that cause accidents, as these cars reduce road collision accidents by up to 80%, and also eliminate human errors from the driver who may They are stray and inattentive, or they go through psychological conditions that are not suitable for driving, and they also eliminate carbon emissions, as well as they are participatory vehicles, which reduces the number of cars and congestion on the road.”

Abdul Majeed stated that the committee, which is developing legislation for self-driving vehicles, deals with the relevant local and federal government agencies to set all requirements, in order to achieve the highest levels of security and safety, noting that it is expected that these requirements will be completed before the end of this year.

He explained that self-driving vehicles are divided into two types, the first is cars that do not need a driver responsible for driving the vehicle as a whole, and in all its cases, whether in normal conditions such as traffic lights, or in abnormal conditions that occur suddenly, such as the presence of diversions on the road, while the type The second is self-driving cars, which need a driver to monitor the situation when driving, and intervene only when needed.
