Unveiled in the press a few months ago, the Opel Astra was delayed because of the semiconductor crisis that has hit the automotive industry since successive confinements.

In photos, it already made a good impression thanks to its modern line which somewhat dusted off its very (too?) classic image.

In "person", this impression is confirmed and this 6th generation of a model launched in 1991 is by far the most aesthetically successful.

Very inspired by that of the Mokka, the front features the Vizor, a stylistic signature that characterizes the brand's new products.

Very refined, this dynamic design completely transforms the Astra which suddenly gives a hell of a shot of old to the previous generation!

Simplified, the line of German is a real success which testifies to the revival of the mark since its integration within PSA, then of Stellantis.

And who says large automotive group says economies of scale, the Astra is therefore based on the Peugeot 308 platform, from which it also takes over the mechanics.

Neat comfort

Compared to the French, the Astra differs among other things by the treatment of its interior which "sticks" perfectly to the new philosophy of the brand.

The dashboard is refined while nevertheless retaining physical controls, and benefits from two customizable screens for the instrumentation and the multimedia system.

The overall quality of the materials has taken a leap forward, although there are still some plastics that are vulnerable to scratches.

For the rest, the Astra takes care of its occupants, with particularly comfortable seats approved by the German Institute for Back Health, plenty of storage space, very decent roominess and a trunk with a capacity of 367 litres. (305 for the PHEV version).

An air of deja vu

Unsurprisingly, we find in the Astra already known French mechanics In essence, the offer starts with a 3-cylinder 1.2 block of 110 or 130 hp.

Associated with a 6-speed manual gearbox or with an 8-speed automatic transmission (130 hp only), the latter is surprisingly pleasant while being pleasant to the ear.

The other good news is that it is sober, with an average of around 6 l/100 km on our test route.

From Peugeot, the Opel also recovers the excellent plug-in hybrid mechanics which combines a 1.5 petrol engine with an electric powertrain, for a combined power of 180 hp.

Thanks to a 12.2 kWh battery, the Astra can travel around sixty kilometers in 100% electric mode.

This version is very pleasant to use, in particular thanks to its silent operation.

Capable of driving up to 135 km/h without using its combustion engine, the Astra offers enough autonomy for most daily journeys.

Even if Opel boasts of having brought its own chassis settings to the Astra, it offers behavior very close to that of its French cousin.

Offering a good compromise between comfort and dynamism, it has reached the happy medium, which makes it a pleasant saloon regardless of the version chosen.

A fact that has become rare enough to note, Opel has not forgotten the big wheels, since a 1.5 diesel version of 130 hp is in the catalog.

Add to that a 225 bhp plug-in variant that will later join the range, and you have a more compelling Astra than ever.

Attack price: 23.750€.
