The KfW subsidy for the energy-efficient renovation of buildings can be applied for again from tomorrow, Tuesday: New applications could be made to KfW from February 22nd, the ministry of Robert Habeck (Greens) announced on Monday.

The refurbishment subsidy was discontinued in the course of the KfW subsidy freeze for more energy-efficient buildings, which was surprisingly announced in January, which led to sharp criticism from the housing industry, but also from consumer protection groups.

On January 24, the federal government announced that the current energy efficiency subsidies from the state-owned KfW had been stopped with immediate effect.

In addition to the new building subsidies according to the KfW efficiency standard EH55 and the higher EH40 standard, this also affected the energy-related refurbishment of buildings.

According to Economics Minister Habeck, the reason for the funding stop was that the funds for the continuation of the program had already been exhausted.

As a first step after the funding stop, KfW began to process all eligible old applications that were received before January 24th.

Now the refurbishment funding within the framework of the federal funding for efficient buildings (BEG) is starting again, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Monday.

The funding conditions for renovation measures remained "unchanged".

Last week, the federal government, together with the budget committee of the Bundestag, provided new funds for the BEG in the amount of around 9.5 billion euros, which according to the ministry both for the processing of the old applications submitted before January 24th and for the resumption of the refurbishment subsidy and "are intended for the new edition of the EH40 new building subsidy".

These funds should therefore “secure the financing until the regular budget is passed”.

A quick reorganization is planned for the promotion of energy-efficient new buildings.

"Intensive coordination is currently taking place within the federal government on the new EH40 new construction subsidy," said the Ministry of Economics.

EH55 funding was permanently discontinued as of January 24th.
