Hacking a car that has a contactless key is still as easy as ever.
In any case, this is what Adac, the German association of motorists, which regularly carries out tests on “keyless” systems (without key).
And its conclusions are not reassuring for motorists.
Of 501 models analyzed since 2016, the association has only found 23 models equipped with an anti-piracy solution, i.e. less than 5%, reports

The “keyless” system appeals because it is very practical.
It allows you to unlock your vehicle and start it without a key and without having to press a button.
However, this system is also vulnerable.
Criminals can pick up the presence signal emitted by the remote control.
It only takes one person near the key and another near the car to intercept the signal.
A serious problem in the event of theft because without a break-in, the insurance can protest.
French manufacturers lagging behind
Known since 2011, the vulnerability of the device can be countered by the use of ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses.
The latter make it possible to very precisely assess the distance between the key and the car and can therefore prevent attacks.
But this technology is not yet widely used by the automotive industry.
Vehicles of French brands (Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, DS) tested by Adac still have the old technology and are therefore still vulnerable.
However, other brands are making efforts: Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes.
Until manufacturers adopt UWB, motorists must remain cautious.
The association exposes several solutions: refuse the “keyless” option or deactivate it.
If you prefer to use this technology, you must be careful not to leave your key near a door, window or exterior wall.
To guarantee complete safety, it is above all advisable to always park your car in a locked garage.
