The euphoria to buy a home as a result of the pandemic placed 2021 at levels not seen since the real estate boom prior to 2008. The year ended with

565,523 houses sold,

34.6% more than in 2020 and the highest number of transactions since the financial year 2007.

The data published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) put an end to two consecutive years of setbacks, after the 17% decrease that the confinements caused in 2020 and the 0.7% drop that occurred in 2019.

The increase in the sale of homes in 2021 was due to the increase in both transactions on second-hand flats, which rose by 33.8% in the year, and the increase in purchases of new homes by 37.7% .

91.5% of the homes transferred by sale in 2021 were free and 8.5% protected.

The number of free homes transmitted by sale increased by 35.2% compared to 2020 and that of protected homes by 27.7%.

By communities, the autonomies with the highest number of transmissions per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021 were the Valencian Community (1,992), La Rioja (1,845) and Andalusia (1,772).

On the other hand, the regions with the highest annual increases in the number of home sales in 2021 were La Rioja (42.7%), Andalusia (42.5%) and Cantabria (38.0%), while the Basque Country ( 15.8%), the Canary Islands (22.0%) and the Principality of Asturias (23.5%) registered the smallest increases.
