The eurozone economy grew moderately at the end of 2021.

Economic output (GDP) rose by 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter, according to the Eurostat statistics office in Luxembourg on Tuesday.

A first estimate was thus confirmed.

In the third quarter, the 19 countries with the common currency grew even more strongly by 2.3 percent.

The growth of the member countries was very different.

While Spain and Portugal grew strongly by 2.0 percent and 1.6 percent respectively, the German economy performed poorly.

It shrank by 0.7 percent.

In 2021 as a whole, the eurozone economy grew by 5.2 percent.

The 27 countries of the European Union (EU) expanded at the same pace.

The strong growth follows a drastic slump in the first Corona year 2020. The trade surplus fell in 2021 from 233.9 billion euros in the previous year to 128.4 billion euros.

Exports rose 14.1 percent year-on-year and imports increased in value by 21.4 percent.
