Particularly expensive and a source of pollution from mass production and countless waste, the era of “all disposable” has had its day.

But while more and more consumers are turning to virtuous alternatives, such as second-hand or recycled products, the repair market has on the other hand had a hard time taking off so far... Except that after a first salvo of measures in 2021, the supply of spare parts is reinforced in 2022. Explanations.

From a duty to inform...

For several years now, the authorities have declared war on planned obsolescence (understand a voluntary reduction in the lifespan of a product).

But if the tendency of certain equipment to break down quickly is carefully scrutinized, it appeared much more effective to bet on the repairability of the equipment rather than to try to prove the infringement.

A salvo of measures resulting from the anti-waste law of February 10, 2020 has therefore been put in place from 2021 to help inform the consumer's choice when purchasing equipment.

In addition to the entry into force of the repairability index, which imposes a display on the more or less repairable nature of five types of new products (washing machines, televisions, smartphones, laptops and lawn mowers), manufacturers have thus the obligation to inform the seller, who must himself inform the consumer, of the availability of spare parts.

Downside: only in-store purchases are affected!

Moreover, the professionals remain free to offer or not these elements essential to the repair of the product and had, until now, no obligation to indicate it when that was precisely not the case.

To an obligation to supply

An additional turn of the screw, still based on the 2020 anti-waste law, was given on January 1, 2022: from now on, the seller is not only required to inform the consumer about the availability of spare parts but also about their non-availability. -availablity !

What discourage the purchase and thus, it is hoped, to encourage the manufacturers to work hard to provide the elements necessary for the repair.

Similarly, when spare parts are actually provided, the manufacturer or importer has 15 days to provide them, compared to 2 months previously.

Although the systematic and general supply of these materials is not yet on the agenda, certain electronic and electrical products have also passed the milestone of obligation through a decree of December 31, 2021.

Our "WASTE" file

Thus, manufacturers of laptops and smartphones must now offer spare parts for the entire period of sale of their models and up to 5 years after the end of their marketing.

This measure notably concerns batteries, screens, power connectors, chargers, motherboards, radiators, keyboards, ports, connectors, cameras, microphones and speakers.

Sustainable development obliges, these new incentives for repair also intend to promote the circular economy.

Since January 1, 2022, professional repairers have indeed had the obligation to offer at least one offer including second-hand spare parts for certain categories of equipment.

From household appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers, to laptops, televisions and even smartphones, without forgetting their main components, all these everyday items of equipment can thus be repaired at home. using used parts.

In all cases, repairers must inform their customers of this possibility of using second-hand items rather than new ones, specifying the difference in price and time.

The medical equipment concerned

Electronic products are not the only ones to enter the era of repair, medical equipment also benefits from these new measures thanks to a decree of December 16, 2021!

Since January 1, 2022, a certain number of medical devices are also subject to the obligation to have spare parts for the 5 years following the end of their marketing.

Similarly, repairers must offer at least one supply of second-hand spare parts for wheelchairs, walkers and other electric scooters dedicated to the physically handicapped, walking sticks, blood pressure monitors, electric thermometers, standers, patient lifting devices, shell seats or the modular armchairs.
