First appearing on trucks, Adblue then spread to private vehicles.
This additive feeds the SCR catalyst to reduce emissions of pollutants and harmful particles, by converting nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour.
Made from different chemical components including urea and demineralized water, it requires ammonia in its production process, which is currently a problem.
Because to produce the latter, you need natural gas.
And its very high current price is pushing many manufacturers to reduce or even suspend their production of Adblue.
China, the main producer of urea, has notably blocked a large part of its exports since last fall, which raises fears of a shortage.
Without the valuable additive, diesel engines will refuse to run, which would have serious consequences for road transport and the mobility of people who own a Euro 6 diesel vehicle. Unfortunately, there is not really an alternative.
We can only hope that the current situation evolves positively...
