Given the escalation of inflation,

Citizens

has registered this Friday in the Congress of Deputies a

non-law proposal (PNL)

to

adapt personal income tax to inflation

and cushion the loss of purchasing power that workers are suffering.

"The current thresholds of the general income tax scale have not been modified since January 1, 2015. In this same period of time (January 2015 to December 2021, latest data available on the INE website),

the CPI has increased by 12.8%

Consequently, many taxpayers who, due to the effect of the nominal variation in their income, without having really increased their economic capacity,

are paying today for a higher tax rate than they should

, "explains

Ciudadanos

in the document of three pages signed by

Edmundo Bal

, to which EL MUNDO has had access.

The party of Inés Arrimadas proposes that the bases go

from 12,450 euros to 14,044 euros

;

from €20,200 to €22,786;

from €35,200 to €39,706;

from €60,000 to €67,680;

and from

300,000 to 338,400 euros,

which would mean

tax savings for taxpayers,

since if their income has increased and they have changed brackets, they will have suffered a loss since the increase has disappeared due to the effect of inflation.

They consider that not deflating personal income tax rates "

goes against the constitutional mandate

that the tax system must meet the principle of economic capacity, by increasing the taxpayer's effective tax rate without actually increasing their income in real terms."

In addition, they believe that maintaining these thresholds "which do not correspond to economic reality" is "

further aggravating the loss of purchasing power"

suffered by workers due to inflation.

The objective of Ciudadanos is for Congress to issue a PNL in which "

the Government is urged to deflate the

Personal Income Tax rate, in order to adjust the sections of the scale of said tax to the evolution of inflation and the real economic capacity of taxpayers".

Spanish workers experienced in 2021 the greatest loss of purchasing power in at least the last 20 years, since salaries grew on average much less than prices.

To this is added that, by not deflating the income tax bases, the salary increase they had (well below inflation) led them to pay more to the Tax Agency, so

that profit was even lower in net terms.

Meanwhile, the Tax Agency obtained a

record collection of 220,000 million euros in 2021,

supported above all by the middle and lower classes.

Only for personal income tax, the Treasury entered almost 100,000 million, a historical record.
