Called Virtual Roads, the project developed by Porsche and the Swiss start-up Way Ahead Technologies will allow drivers to record any route using a specific application on their smartphone, which simply needs to be positioned behind the windshield.

The data can then be automatically transferred to the virtual world through software that converts recordings of the road and surroundings into a 3D environment.

The project is based on specialized software that uses artificial intelligence to capture a road and its surrounding features, such as guardrails and trees.

These characteristics are then reproduced as faithfully and as quickly as possible in 3D digital form.

The file of each unique route generated using the new application is compatible with a number of racing video games, including "Assetto Corsa".

Capable of scanning up to 8 kilometers in length in less than an hour, the software could potentially retrieve data acquired by the car such as that from sensors that measure lateral acceleration and chassis control.

Enough to push the realism even further.
