The online trading giant Amazon wants to open its third logistics center in Rhineland-Palatinate in Kaiserslautern with around 1000 new jobs.
The US company announced that it should start operating in autumn 2022.
"A low three-digit million amount" will be invested.
The floor area of the three-storey building should be around 48,000 square meters.
"The technology with the transport robots ensures that we can build more compactly and still store more goods in less space than at older locations," it said.
Work is expected to be carried out in three shifts.
The mayor of the Palatinate city, Klaus Weichel (SPD), commented: "The settlement of Amazon is worth its weight in gold for Kaiserslautern because it complements our job portfolio in the right place, both quantitatively and qualitatively."
The local employment agency said that "the upswing in mail order with warehouse logistics in the West Palatinate is continuing".
The industry also opens up opportunities for further development for unskilled workers.
The unemployment rate in Kaiserslautern is higher than the national average.
According to the city administration, it was 8.2 percent in January.
Nationally, it was 4.6 percent.
In the new logistics center in Kaiserslautern, according to Amazon, the basic wage when you start is 12.22 euros gross per hour.
After 24 months, employees earned an average of 2750 euros gross per month.
There are also various additional services.
The Verdi union has been criticizing Amazon for years for rejecting collective agreements.
She calls for the recognition of the collective bargaining agreements in the retail and mail-order trades as well as negotiations on a "good and healthy work" collective bargaining agreement.
So far there have been two Amazon logistics centers in Rhineland-Palatinate: since 2012 one in Koblenz with 110,000 square meters and 1900 employees without transport robots and since 2018 one in Frankenthal with 88,000 square meters, 1900 employees and supporting robots.
