Carlos San Juan
, the 78-year-old man who calls for "more humane treatment" by the banks, made this February 8 the
symbolic delivery of the 600,000 signatures
collected in the campaign 'I am older, not an idiot', an act in which he thanked the response he has obtained from society but in which he has asked the banks and politicians for "urgent measures" and not "invitations" full of "paternalism".
"This is going to be a tough task," he acknowledged, in statements collected by
Europa Press
, at the entrance to the Ministry of Economy before registering the signatures and meeting with the Secretary General of the Treasury,
Carlos Cuerpo
.
Carlos San Juan has branded this as "a day to give thanks", but also to "keep asking" because, he recalled, "many causes die from the fatigue of those who manage them".
However, he has assured that he will not get tired, but has demanded that the media
continue "being newsworthy"
and deal with this problem with "empathy" and "humanity", as well as urging society to continue signing: "If we reach the million very well, and if we reach two million even better".
Carlos San Juan's initiative has brought to light the situation of a large part of the elderly in Spain who feel that the
banks have excluded them from the
financial system due to digitization and the effects of a restructuring process in the sector that has been reducing the network of offices, employees and ATMs available in the country.
A recent analysis by the Association of Financial Users Asufin points out that the number of
open branches decreased by 54.2%
between 2008 and 2021;
the number of
employees
, 39.1%, and the number of
ATMs
, 22.1%, and points to these reductions as the main cause of the deterioration in bank customer service.
On a day-to-day basis, the impact of this balance translates into the financial exclusion of a part of the population that is finding it increasingly difficult to physically access the services of banking entities, either because they are disappearing from some areas and municipalities of the country, or because the digitization of products leaves out those who are not capable of accessing or adapting to these changes.
That is precisely what Carlos San Juan is demanding, who in recent weeks has led the initiative that has put this problem in the spotlight that affects and worries more and more older people.
"I have come to feel humiliated when asking for help at a bank and being talked to as if I were an idiot for not knowing how to complete an operation," he declared in an interview with
EL MUNDO.
The protests have reached Moncloa, which in an unexpected action summoned the main representatives of the sector to warn them of the situation and to demand that they review their protocols in the face of the evident financial exclusion of a part of the population.
The Vice President of Economic Affairs,
Nadia Calviño
, led the meeting and gave the entities a period of one month to make the corrections.
The deadline expires in a few days.
