• The number of job seekers fell by 16% in Brittany in 2021 compared to 2020.

  • The region was less affected by the economic slowdown due to the health crisis.

  • Some sectors such as construction, catering or agri-food are struggling to recruit.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, Brittany and its three million inhabitants had 125,340 job seekers.

According to the State services, this figure is at its lowest for nearly ten years.

Following the national trend, Brittany saw its number of category A job seekers (without activity) decrease by -6.4% compared to the previous quarter.

This corresponds to a decrease of 16.2% compared to the end of 2020.

The recourse to partial unemployment and the economic recovery at the end of the various confinements had a positive effect on employment, in particular in sectors such as the hotel and catering industry or the construction industry, in which the recovery was much stronger and faster.

These figures confirm, according to the press release, “the resilience of the Breton territory” whose economy, mainly oriented towards agriculture and the agri-food industry, has been spared by the crisis linked to Covid-19.

Tourism activity also picked up last summer, with a lesser drop in hotel nights than at national level, as well as turnover fairly quickly returning to a level close to that of before the crisis in the restoration.

Recruitment difficulties

While this trend affects all age groups, it is even more marked among young people under 25, where the fall in job applications stands at -9%.

This decline could be explained by the use of apprenticeship contracts and the implementation of the "1 young person 1 solution" scheme launched in the summer of 2020. The improvement also benefits the long-term unemployed, whose number of registrants fell by 4.1% in the fourth quarter, all categories combined.

In this region which has one of the lowest unemployment rates, certain sectors such as agri-food, IT or care professions are still struggling to recruit.
