The Government calls on the Spanish banks to demand measures against the financial exclusion of the elderly.

Claims in recent weeks from retirees and pensioners have brought to light the situations that many of them have to face on a daily basis and the Executive

has given entities a period of one month to

review and modify the necessary protocols to remedy the situation.

The Vice President of Economic Affairs,

Nadia Calviño

, led a meeting this Thursday with representatives of the sector that reports the alarm created in the Government by this matter.

The meeting was attended by the president of the

Spanish Banking Association

(AEB), José María Roldán, the general director of

CECA

, José María Méndez, the general secretary of the National Union of Credit Cooperatives (

UNACC

), Cristina Freijanes , and the director of Conduct of Bank of Spain entities, Fernando Tejada, "to jointly address the urgency and importance of guaranteeing the financial inclusion of the entire society, including our elders", as explained by the economic department in a note .

At the meeting, which was also attended by the Secretary of State for the Economy,

Gonzalo García de Andrés

, and the Secretary General of the Treasury,

Carlos Cuerpo

, the vice-president conveyed the Government's concern about this issue and requested information on the effectiveness of the measures that the banking sector has already put in place. Likewise, it has pointed out the need to adopt measures to ensure the access of the elderly to financial services.

In addition, a period of one month has been established to analyze and act.

Specifically, the Observatory for Financial Inclusion will carry out a diagnosis of the situation and after that time, the banking employers will review their 'Strategic Protocol to Strengthen the Social and Sustainable Commitment of the Bank', thus proposing new solutions to guarantee the financial inclusion of old people.

The expulsion of this user profile from the system has been taking place for a long time, but in recent months the drift has accelerated due to the massive closure of offices, the ere in the entities that have affected thousands of employees and the digitization process of services without an alternative for those who cannot access them.
