Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned Russia of an escalation in the conflict with Ukraine.

"The Russian side knows about our determination," said Scholz on Wednesday at a digital event of the World Economic Forum.

"I hope she also realizes that the benefits of cooperation far outweigh the cost of further confrontation."

Boundaries should not be changed by violence;

the strength of the law applies, but not the law of the strongest.

Scholz admitted that the success of the talks with Russia is currently not foreseeable.

"But after years of growing tensions, silence is not a sensible option," said the Chancellor.

There is a clear commitment to Ukraine's territorial integrity.

The federal government wants to use the German G-7 presidency to set up an ambitious climate club.

The world is facing the most important transformation since the Industrial Revolution, said Scholz.

"We cannot wait for the slowest participants in the fight against climate change," said Scholz.

The climate club is open to other countries that want to participate.

Scholz named green hydrogen as a field of cooperation.

The Federal Chancellor was confident about the future of Europe. The goal of climate neutrality by 2050 is very ambitious, but Europe can benefit from its role as a pioneer. In this way, a higher degree of technological sovereignty is possible. "Europe is not just a billiard ball in the global geopolitical game," assured the SPD politician. With its social market economy, Germany could play an important role in the coming global transformation.

At the same time, Scholz called for greater efforts for a global vaccination campaign against Corona.

"Without a truly global immunization campaign, we will soon run out of letters in the Greek alphabet to name new virus variants," he warned.

Germany, already the second largest donor to the Covax campaign, will continue to make its contribution, he promised.

"Through our support for Covax, we aim to reach 70 percent of the world's population by mid-year."

Scholz announced that one of the priorities of the German G7 Presidency will be to improve the international health infrastructure.

However, partners, especially from the private sector, would have to help.

Fully funding the global vaccination campaign is also “the boost our economies need.”
