As the health crisis drags on, there is one sector that is doing well: that of online gambling;

This is revealed by the results of the National Gaming Authority (ANJ).

According to this report, the sector achieved a record turnover of 617 million euros in the second quarter of 2021, almost double compared to 2019 (343 million euros at the time, over the same period).

Moreover, this amount had never been so high since the opening of the online gaming market in 2010.

Men around 30 years old

In detail, we learn that sports betting remains the most popular with players, with a total of 2.15 billion euros in stakes and 2.8 million active player accounts.

According to the ANJ, this enthusiasm, particularly strong in the first quarter of 2021 (68% of the sector's turnover), is due to the major sporting events that took place during this period, namely the Euro football tournament and Roland- Garros.

Also progressing well, horse racing betting is still popular, while poker remains one of the most active online games, even though it has seen a 13% drop compared to the same quarter of 2020, after having recorded a sharp increase during the confinements.

As for the profiles of the players, they are unsurprisingly mainly men, especially for sports betting (91%), the median age being around 30 years for this category, against 48 years for horse racing betting.

Finally, the amounts involved are not negligible, since 26% of bettors bet less than 30 euros, 22% between 30 and 100 euros and 23% between 100 and 300 euros.
