It has been a long time since regulated savings products are the stuff of dreams.

But even though their rate of return is nonexistent, these portfolios play an essential role as a safety net for households.

With the health crisis, the French have more than ever placed their savings on these flexible and tax-free supports.

According to the Banque de France, payments on livrets A reached 167 billion euros in 2020, a record.

Also showing a good performance, the sustainable and inclusive development booklet, the LDDS, garnered 53 billion euros, its highest level since 2013.

Flexible operation

Much less publicized than the booklet A, the LDDS obeys more strict conditions.

Only an adult can open this savings book (where their cousin is accessible to minors), provided they deposit at least 15 euros.

In terms of operation, there is no difference since the two accounts allow you to make payments and withdrawals free of charge.

Likewise, the yield of the LDDS is based on the interest rate of the livret A, currently 0.50%.

The objective is therefore clearly not to make your money grow but only to place it in safety (the funds are 100% guaranteed by the State), everything being exempt from tax and social security contributions.

On the other hand, the sustainable development booklet is capped at 12,000 euros, where the A booklet allows reaching 22,950 euros.

This is why this product is considered as a complement to the first.

This limitation is however largely sufficient to build up precautionary savings since banking establishments recommend keeping aside the equivalent of 6 months of income, while the surplus will have every interest in being placed on more profitable supports.

Donations highlighted

If the LDDS is not very attractive, its green color may interest some.

It should be noted that the sums accumulated on this regulated booklet are used to finance loans aimed at improving the energy performance of housing at attractive rates, for the benefit of any applicant even if he is not the holder of this product.

Since October 1, 2020, you can also make a donation directly to a social and solidarity economy company from your LDDS.

To encourage generosity, your bank must also provide you each year with a list of at least ten companies of this type.
