While the challenge is to dispose of food that is still edible, so-called "food loss," a demonstration experiment will be conducted at a supermarket in Tokyo to change the price of products according to the length of the expiration date. ..

This experiment will be conducted by the major supermarket "Ito-Yokado" at a store in Sumida-ku, Tokyo from the 12th in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. We will introduce a mechanism to gradually lower the selling price.

Specifically, up to four types of stickers are attached to the same product according to the length of the expiration date, and the price fluctuates.

Then, we will verify whether it is effective in reducing "food loss" due to expiration of the expiration date by having shoppers select products with low prices.

In addition, by having shoppers use a smartphone app that records the amount of food consumed at home, the difference between the amount purchased and the amount consumed can be "visualized" and awareness of reducing food loss. We will also promote efforts to raise the level of food.

Yuko Koyama, general manager of the major supermarket CSR / SDGs promotion department, said, "We are trying to sell out our products, but food loss is inevitable. We appeal to consumers as well as producers and food manufacturers. I want to contribute to the reduction. "
