Already booming, online shopping has exploded under the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Ministry of the Economy, the sector generated 112 billion euros in turnover in 2020 in France.

But this growing success must encourage prudence and responsibility.

Thus, the General Directorate for Competition, Consumption and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) carries out numerous checks to ensure the security and compliance of products sold by electronic commerce marketplaces.

However, the results of its successive annual surveys are worrying.

Electric shocks and suffocations

Out of nearly 450 products analyzed in 2018, 2019 and 2020, 63% were found to be non-compliant, 28% of which were dangerous. Cosmetic creams, travel adapters, costume jewelry, smoke detectors, ovulation and pregnancy tests, play toys and other childcare items… all have revealed a high rate of abnormalities. And we are not talking about products bought on obscure platforms but of items sold by the ten most popular marketplaces in France: Amazon.fr, Cdiscount.com, Ebay.fr, Fnac.com, Aliexpress.com, Joom.com, Shopping.rakuten.com, Rueducommerce.fr, Vova.com and Wish.com.

On the list of the most worrying objects: 87% of adapters and 66% of electric garlands presented risks of electric shocks and fire.

You also have to look twice before buying costume jewelry online, since 74% revealed the presence of carcinogenic and toxic heavy metals (cadmium, nickel or lead).

Finally, the smallest consumers can be victims of this negligence insofar as 25% of the toys were dangerous, in other words presented a risk of suffocation or strangulation due to the presence of small detachable elements or cords.
