In the fight against inflation, Poland wants to completely eliminate VAT on some foodstuffs from February.

Finance Minister Tadeusz Koscinski told Polsat News on Wednesday that the EU had implicitly agreed to the move.

Although the tax could actually be canceled earlier, retailers need the time to switch their registers.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki had previously announced that he would be discussing a reduction in VAT on fuels with the EU.

The ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) has launched a package of tax cuts on gasoline, natural gas and electricity in connection with cash grants to counter the inflation of 7.8 percent.

On Wednesday, Koscinski did not rule out the possibility that the rate could rise to ten percent by June.
